Your new students will be equally as excited to meet you as you will be to meet them. This is your time to let them know where your heart and passion stands. You know this is a challenging job and that you will have to work hard. If you can connect with your students and teach to their hearts, the learning environment will be 'safe'. They will trust you and know that you are meeting them where they are (which is all over the map!).

Have FUN and be organized.

Lastly, find a friend at school, someone who will mentor you every step of the way. You will find a life long relationship with this person and in no time will be asked to mentor new teachers yourself.

Best of luck! Petersona

Be Flexible...

Status: Advice for New Teachers
by Occasional Visitor on 06-28-2011 07:02 AM

As I began my teaching career 15 years ago, I was given the usual (extremely valuable) advice: Start off the year with structure and a strong behavior plan and stick to it; get organized, will make your life a lot easier, and make notes for the next year as to what works, and what doesn't. However, the advice I found most helpful I received from a college professor that had spent a great deal of time in the classroom: Be flexible.

She taught me that in this profession, you have to be prepared to change your "plans" at any moment, for any reason. Wow - was she right!! I kept this advice in mind when I had a student throw up during one of my lessons. Be flexible. I had to quickly turn the attention of my third graders elsewhere while I took care of the situation. There was the day we had a small electrical fire in the building AND a tornado warning at the very same time. Be flexible. Sometimes you just have to stop what you are doing. Period. (The crazy thing is that we were studying natural disasters at the time!) Or, there was the teacher that I was to switch classes with to teach math - who decided to do a science lesson instead, leaving me to teach an impromptu math lesson with a group of students I usually didn't teach. Be flexible. I could go on and on about the assemblies, shortened days, illnesses that seem to cause half the class to be absent on the same day.... but I think you get the point.

Be flexible. These things will happen. You will get through it. It is part of this wonderful profession and part of what keeps is exciting!

1. Show no fear!

2. When correcting a student's behavior, use 10 words or less; after that their eyes glaze over, and they stop listening.

First year teachers, you have begun a new journey in a career that is definitely rewarding but also challenging. The first year will make you wonder if your career choice was really wise; endure to the end. You will grow tremendously as an individual and educator in your first year (and many after that), and all of those experiences will make you develop into an effective professional who has the fantastic responsibilty of shaping future generations. As I tell my children, friends, and students, nothing worthwhile comes easily; you must be challenged to develop character. Teachers are masters of character and character development. As you continue in this honorable profession, you will affect lives in positive manners that you may never know about, but in the hearts of those students, they will know how you influenced their lives. Endure to the end; it will get better.

Advice to new teachers!

Find an "old" teacher!:smileyvery-happy:  Make them your friend, mentor, shoulder to cry on, therapist, Dear Abbey, and mostly just be there to be your BACK UP PLAN!  When you have someone to talk you down from the ledge (sometimes on a daily basis) it makes it easier to see the brighter side of it all.

Being a first year teacher is so exciting!  You are finally getting your own classroom with your own group of students.  I have a few tidbits of advice for every first year teacher that are "must haves" to follow.  First of all, you want to be sure to get to know all of the secretarial and custodial staff very well.  You will soon learn that having them by your side is going to be very helpful for you for years to come.  They are the ones who schedule appointments, keep track of students, talk to parents most often and last but not least, keep your room clean and help to move things around when needed and keep an eye out for you when things become available that you need in your classroom that you don't want to pay for out of pocket such as book cases and filing cabinets!

My second piece of advice is geared more towards the student body.  I find it very important to first and foremost have great classroom management.  Sometimes it can be difficult, but if your students know from the very beginning of the year what your expectations are and what consequences may be received for inappropriate behavior, you will end up having a much better year than expected.  I also always have the entire week of lessons posted on the board for each of my classes.  This way, students can see on Monday what the entire week looks like and know what is coming due.  This eliminates a lot of the "I didn't know that assignment was due already!"  Also, it eliminates a lot of the chitter chatter each time a student comes into the room and says "what are we doing today?"  All they have to do is look at the board and read it!  I found that my students love knowing what they are going to be doing the entire week so they can also plan their other class work load around what they have due in my class.  Not only does it keep the students organized, but it also help the teacher.  By having my lesson plans done a week in advance, it eliminates any last minute, rush planning that would usually end up not being such a great lesson.  Plus, I can have everything ready to go (power points, worksheets, or activities) in folders or baskets for each day.  This eliminates a lot of stress on a teacher because each and every day is all ready to go!

Last but not least, make sure to develop relationships with each of your students.  It is important to them to know that you care not only about their education, but also their health and safety.  If a student "needs" to talk to you about something that has nothing to do with school, make sure to make a few moments sometime throughout the day to let them vent to you.  Believe it or not, even though it is not an academic issue, it is affecting their academics for that day.  If they feel they can trust you enough to talk to you, then they will in turn respect you enough to meet or exceed your expectations in the classroom and trust when you tell them the importance of excelling in all classes.

I really hope that this advice helps a few first year teachers out their because I didn't have this my first year and wish that I had because it has really helped me become less stressed and have less work to bring home in recent year.

Body Spelling

Status: Advice for New Teachers
by Occasional Contributor on 05-13-2011 10:44 AM

When we are reviewing for the weekly spelling test, I have students use "body spelling" to form each word.  Students pair up to form vowel teams in letters as well as prefixes or affixes to words.  Then the rest of the class has to spell out the word orally.  I take pictures of each word and present it in a powerpoint and kids guess which word are which.  They love it!!!

It is tough time for me to say one or two in the span of my 23 years teaching, Mathematics, experience. It was altogether a wonderful experience to see their happiness in their eyes when they accomplish something in the class. As you all know Math is the toughest nut shell to break for most of the students. The expression on the face of a student " I got it " is really great moment for any teacher for that matter.

It was a great transition for me to America being a Math Lecturer. The first whole year it took me understand the system and procedures and rules and Classroom Management.

After the first year of my teaching I have clearly understood one thing that we don't need to frame any rules and procedures for the class, keep one rule for all that is RESPECT. It makes every one at their places but you need to consistent.

Being a Gandhian I always believe in showing utmost patience in dealing challenge situations showing lot of respect.

Bottom line is Teacher is always a student who should be always ready to learn. Respect and be Respected

I agree with so many of the posts I have been reading.  As I reflect on my first year of teaching, and the years thereafter, I think some of the best advice is first, learning to be fair but firm with students.  Learn to say no.  It may be harder for some than others, but creating boundaries from day one and learning to say "no" can be a great teaching advisary. Second, some advice I received early on, "always give students the benefit of the doubt." You never know the full circumstances of any given student.  It may be a fine line between being to strick or being a push over, find the balance that suits you.  Third, respect your students.  It is a simple concept that I have seen overlooked many times.  Respect goes a long way.  Lastly, keep your students always on their toes by changing things up all of the time.  Surprise them.  Keep your content exciting and ALWAYS catch your students doing good things!  Praise goes a long way as well!

Giving praise

Status: Advice for New Teachers
by Occasional Visitor on 05-05-2011 12:22 PM

I have found the best thing to keep in mind is to give praise for the little things that the student(s) can do.  Keep working on what needs to be done but always find something to praise even if it something as small as telling the student your glad to see him/her at school or has a nice smile, but always mean what you say otherwise you will be a phony. Students always know a phony when they see one.  One more thing is to call the parents every couple of weeks to tell them something good their child has done, they get tired of hearing the bad things their child has done at school.  You can do wonders with a student that has a bad attitude if you keep a good attitude.

1st year teaching tips

One of the things that I learned that first year of teaching has helped me every year after; and that is to glean from the veteran teachers and your administration. When I felt overwhelmed it was my teammates that had the experience that encouraged me and gave me ideas for bulletin boards, different teaching methods, and classroom management. My administrator and her assistant were valuable in helping me to be the best that I could be in my classroom. Developing a relationship with them enhanced my first year teaching.

The first day of school I have the kids fill out an contact sheet with their parent's email address.  I take those addresses and put them as a group in my address book.  It's a lot of work initially but it pays off.  I take the first five minutes of my conference everyday and email the parents about homework, what we did in class, upcoming tests/quizzes, and upcoming events in school.  The parents loved it and I had less conferences concerning grades because most of the parents were aware of what was going on in the classroom.  This can be done at any level...I teach middle school.

Be tough, be fair, be consistent, but be YOU. Kids can smell BS from a mile away. If you're trying to be someone that you're not they will never respect you.

During my first year of teaching, one of my mentors gave me this advice.  I was nervous about having to call home for a negative reason. I didn't like the idea of having to tell parents that their child was having a problem in school academically or behaviorally.  My mentor said to start every parent call with the words, " I need your help. . ." Establish a working communication with parents right from the start. Let them know that you want to work with them for their child. They know their children well and can offer wonderful insight into any puzzling or difficult behaviors you see in school. Build a positive relationship with parents by calling for positive reasons. Then when you need to discuss something difficult you have already established a rapport. Parents just want to know that you care about their child. If they know that, they will work with you to solve any problems that arise.

Summer Notes

Status: Advice for New Teachers
by Occasional Contributor on 05-05-2011 10:17 AM

Last summer, about a month after school ended, I wrote out postcards to all of my former students. I wrote compliments on them about the students strengths, wished them well in the upcoming year, and commented on how my summer was going. I also included an email address that I have created just for my previous students so we can stay in touch. I love hearing about how they are doing over the years.

Attention and Approval

A & A

That is all kids want. If you can give them ATTENTION, notice them,  and make them feel that you really know them, they will trust you. If you can send the message that you APPROVE of them as people (not behavior, or skills, or work habits, or attitudes)  but really approve of them a individuals whom you value, they will do anything for you. I have always come back to this when I am frustrated with a student. I try to remember to give all the kids lots of "A & A".

Get Organized

Status: Advice for New Teachers
by Occasional Contributor on 05-05-2011 10:14 AM

To save time during the next year keep everything you do organized in folders and label them by units. I try to keep a copy of every assignment in a folder for the unit so that next year I can pull out the unit folder and already know what I am doing. That way I only have to spend time looking for new ideas and not waste time coming up with the same stuff from last year. I also create a folder on my computer for each unit and put an electronic copy of anything I make in that folder.
