I turn my back to black history month. Why? I am American Indian when is Native American Month, Mexican American, German, and any others. Is this just being selfsih of me?

I am Black, I do not believe that we should celebrate a culture or a race of people because of a month that has been set aside for this. Instead, I encourage students to celebrate who and what they are all year round. However, if students are interested in a race or culture, I will bring out works at that time. I believe that knowledge is the key, not the time of year we celebrate. We just finished with the Aboriginal culture. I still encourage questions of any people and show how they differ and how they are alike in ways. This is the main objective in my class. I have all races and cultures in my class and it shows in their artwork. Take the hurt or disappointment out of it and use that to build a better understanding of the world.
