Creating a generation of girls who are strong, independent and confident is one every teacher’s goals. To do so we have to overcome an increasingly negative message from the media, as well as some old stereotypes that should have been dismantled years ago.
This month our partner, Kiki magazine is sponsoring a grant that asks the question, “What is your idea to connect girls to learning experiences that encourage their social, creative and emotional growth?” Take a moment to let us know and you could win cash and prizes to help you implement that idea.
In honor of this grant, we want to take a moment to explore 5 ways you can empower your female students, both in and outside of the classroom. Apply for our grant, and then try these five ideas.
- Challenge your students to question the messages they receive about gender. When you come across a negative or simplistic portrayal of women during the school day, be it in a movie or a class discussion, break it down.
- Monitor your classroom and library materials for magazines that may send discouraging messages to girls. When you come across these articles, use them as a teachable moment-have students question what the motives behind presenting women in this way might be. Balance these ideas with materials that present strong, confident women.
- Encourage involvement in sports. Studies have shown that playing sports raises self esteem and grades in girls.
- Promote clubs that encourage healthy growth in girls, like the Girl Scouts or a club or group within your school.
- Create a mentoring program for female students by pairing them with successful women in the community.
What are your great ideas for empowering your female students? In less time than it took you to read this article you can apply for a grant and be on your way to winning $200 to make that idea happen. Don’t wait-apply today!
