4 Ways You Can Help Prevent Tragedy with the Click of a Mouse

nsnDid you know that in 2010 about 180,000 children were treated in hospital emergency departments for toy-related injuries?  Or that an estimated average of nearly 2,400 lives were lost in recent years because of fire safety missteps? Or that each year about 800 adults and children die in ATV-related incidents? How can teachers like you help prevent such unimaginable tragedies?  Here are four easy ways:

  1. Get the facts.  Join the Neighborhood Safety Network, a free program of the U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission (CPSC) and you'll get regular email updates from the CPSC with urgent safety messages.  Plus, you'll get access to NSN's free online tool kit that includes easy-to-use downloadable tools like posters and publications, safety tips and more. Join now.
  2. Be an advocate.  Keep safety resources on-hand in your classroom for your students to read and learn from, distribute pertinent emails and information to your parents and encourage your entire school community to get involved.
  3. Help students become leaders.  Go beyond simply teaching your students about safety—help them to become the teachers themselves.  Empower them to help their parents, their siblings and their friends stay safe by giving them access to information and resources.
  4. Create a school safety club.  Gather a group of student leaders and create a school club that promotes safety.  Your club can distribute materials, hang posters, sponsor events and more—all in an effort to keep your community safe.

Question for you:  Do you worry about safety for kids in your community?  What can you do to help make sure families are protected?
