I would recommend:

  • Dragon Dictation - dictate your next paper instead of typing
  • Soundpaper - record your classes for future listening and take notes at the same time
  • Library of Congress (virtual tour) - Take a tour of one of our nation's treasures
  • Cogs HD - A cool puzzle game that will get your mind working

Have fun!

Hey mgehrett,

I agree with the apps you mentioned but there are thousands more!  This list is aligned by subject.

There are so many apps, but we are limited to using the free apps. I would like to know how others are handling that situation. Are you only using the free apps or do you have some means of purchasing apps?

Re: iPad & iPod touch apps for parents and students

I use the site http://www.freeappalert.com to find apps that are free for that day only (or a limited time). The site updates daily, so I find new apps continuously. Not every day warrents a gem of an app, but it is worh the couple minutes to skim through them. Purchasing iTunes gift cards can solve the problem of buying apps. A $15 card can purchase 15 apps, worthwhile when you find that really great app.

I would recommend Frog dissection for the iPad from Punflay.

For those who are against dissections, this is a great alternative!

Re: iPad & iPod touch apps for parents and students

Our Technology Director set up a single iTunes account for our iPad cart.  This is mostly because we have only one cart at this time.  Right now, I or our tech director update the iPads when needed or add apps when teachers request.  If we come close to our spending limit, I assume the tech director will tell me.  I do tend to look mostly for apps that are free or lower in cost, especially when trying them out for the first time.  If the app proves useful, then we go for the pay for version.  For elementary education, most of the app prices are very reasonable.

If we had more carts of iPads, we would probably need to rethink how we do this. Some schools give itunes card to the teachers who have classroom sets of iPads and in that case I would think the teacher in that classroom then has more control over what he or she decides to put on them.

I imagine each school is a little different in how they use iPads and therefore will have differing ways of distributing apps to them.  If getting funding is a problem, perhaps teacher wish lists or requests for donations could be in the form of itunes cards.  This could certainly be fruitful in gaining a library of apps.

For note & audio taking do you mean Soundnote?  It sounds like what you describe and looks very cool for a reasonable price!

Re: iPad & iPod touch apps for parents and students

I have developed an IPad application for math, Fun with multiplication dots. It reinforces the multiplication facts from 2-12. There are 3 drawings for each number along with math facts. The student draws a line from the lowest number dot to the highest number dot completing a picture. Once the picture is complete, the student can practice their math facts. These are the drawings that I used for my sons not only during the school year but as summer refresher. I would set these drawings out each morning along with a chore. It was amazing how quickly they improved. Even the youngest of students can utilize this app.
