Have a sense of humor.  You will need to be able to laugh at yourself and allow the kids to see you as human.  If they cannot connect with you then it will not matter how proficient you are in delivering the material.  Kids need to be able to bond with you and respect you to learn from you.

I learned so many things my first year of teaching, but the biggest thing was to keep the fire. So many teachers end up with a hard heart when dealing with children and parents. When each child knows you love them no matter what and you care about their future, they will perform and please you the best they know how in the classroom! Teaching is so much more than making sure they know all the skills for your grade level. It is caring for the future of these children when so many of their parents do not. So if I have any advise for a beginning teacher, it is to keep the fire and your job will ne so rewarding! -stephanie r.
